It would be during his tenure here that he would come to know and play with jazz masters and architects, such as bebop’s very own Charlie “Bird” Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navaro, John Coltrane, and pianist Red Garland.Īfter his stint with the Miles Davis Quintet, Jones would move on to exercise and articulate his band-lead motivations and ideas with several of his own projects throughout the years. In 1947, he moved to New York City where he filled the slot as the house drummer at Café Society at Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village. He played with the likes of bassist Paul Chambers from 1955-56 and saxophonist Cannonball Adderley from 1956-58 as a sextet. He was an original member of the Miles Davis Quintet after serving in the Army. Jones saw fit to fashioning it to differentiate himself from Count Bassie’s drummer Jo Jonnes. He owes the creation of his artistic name to another jazz drumming great. With no relation to Pontiac-born American jazz drummer and legend Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones was born with his given name, Joseph Rudolph Jones, on July 15th, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From Sabbath to Bowie to Frankie Knuckles, NIN happened to be making music at the right place and at the right time – at first amongst the fertile dells and winding rivers of Pennsylvania. Frankly, the entire album is one of the greatest works to emerge from North America in the 90s and should be listened to back-to-back as a conceptual album chronicling the the mad, desperate ravings of millennial counterculture youth. Downward Spiral, definitively NIN’s most commercially successful masterwork, was composed of spectacular hits such as “Closer” and “Hurt” the latter of which Johnny Cash would, years later, cover himself. It was here where Sharon Tate and several other guests were brutally murdered in 1969 by the Manson Family. 1994’s The Downward Spiral was, interestingly enough, recorded at Roman Polanski’s old home, 10050 Cielo Drive, located in the exclusive Benedict Canyon Los Angeles neighborhood, christened, for recording purposes, Le Pig. Reznor would go on to produce Manson’s runaway-classic Antichrist Superstar, which inspired legions of weird, nihilistic youth to pursue interests in industrial crossover. Reznor would go on to form a collaborative friendship with a young Marilyn Manson, early in his career as well as multi-instrumentalist Twiggy Ramirez, who would also support NIN in later efforts. NIN even, at some point, co-headlined David Bowie’s Dissonance Tour in 1995, both penetrating and rescuing us from the extraneous and egregious porcelain rift separating rock and roll from its most fantastic progenitors. He even performed, headlining, at Perry Farrell’s 1991 inaugural Lollapalooza music festival where he played along post-punk/goth queen Siouxsie in Siouxsie and the Banshees as well as Farrell’s bread-and-butter, Jane’s Addiction.
Notwithstanding having such humble beginnings, Reznor’s NIN would eventually collaborate with rockers and pop idols such as Dave Grohl, Dave Navarro, and Miley Cyrus (the lattermost curiously enough performing under the pseudonym Ashley O, as a fictitious character based off of a Black Mirror episode where she covered NIN hits such as “Head Like a Hole,” and With Teeth’s “Right Where It Belongs.” He would even go on to curate and make contributions to Original Soundtracks for Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers and David Lynch’s Lost Highway. Melded in the crucible of shattered dreams, anger, frustration, and the altogether doom-and-gloom that we encounter daily in the mechanized world, Nine Inch Nails channels the the zeitgeist of industrial-era Bermingham, England the Black Sabbath sound, with the digital contrivances of our modern age. The entire region, as a matter of fact, from the perspective of this EDM aficionado (shamelessly, guilty as charged), has, historically, been rich in movers and players who have brought the synthladen, eerily-cycling, electronic bass pulses and echoes to the interiors our rib cages for decades now from the dusty, sooty voids of abandoned hubs, traces of Detroit’s former automotive grandeur. Certainly not to be underestimated as a crucial artist to have had introduced industrial music to the mainstream culture masses, Michael Trent Reznor’s mercurial, incredibly dark, and primeval dalliances into post-industrial consciousness originally had its roots in New Castle, Pennsylvania (some sixty miles or so North of Pittsburgh).
